Anyssa Trigueros went to Reno and played against the All Nets, Jam on it, and the Neveda Hoops. Anyssa's team, the MRC Rebels beat the All Nets the score was 22-11. Anyssa won to Jam on it 42-10, and they lost 21-39 against the Nevada Nets.

Andre Corrales has earned honorable mention and $175.00 of prizes in the "Growing Up Asian in America" contest. His essay, "Lost Pictures", described his construction of his family tree for social studies. He was one of 1200 contestants. His family and Ms.Elliott will attend a ceremony honoring winners on Sunday, May 1, at 10:00 at the Asian Art museum. Congratulations Andre!

Another injury lies upon the 5th grade classroom. Andre Corrales sprained his ring finger on his right hand in a basketball game trying to grab a rebound. Luckily he got the rebound, and one blocked shot over the weekend. Now because of this injury, Andre can't write in cursive well or do anything physical with his hand. Get better soon!

St. Anthony's Project

During December the fifth grade made 200 hand made cards and candy bags for the children attending St. Anthony's Diningroom's annual Christmas party. The large number of cards and bags was accomplished due to specialization of labor. Extra candy was eaten by good "fifth grade elves." Each year the fifth grade prepares the cards and bags for the needy children.

Peter's broken foot

On December 30th, 2010, Peter Cuddihy broke his foot. The accident happened at a trampoline when someone jumped hard onto a trampoline sending Peter into the air. Now Peter uses the school elevator with the assistance of kind classmates. Peter anticipates using crutches for about 3 weeks.

On December 5th, 2010, the 5th grade traveled to St. Mary's Cathedral for a tour. The students enjoyed learning about the construction, and the artwork of the church. Agnes Li played the organ under the direction of the organ master. A delicious pizza lunch and dessert concluded the field trip. Pictures taken by the students are posted.

Mark might get a car!

Evan's blue belt!

These are special karate kicks that are used in fighting. It took about one year for him to get his blue belt. He has six karate trophies.

Kai Schelstrate in a Play!

Kaiulani Schelstrate has a starring roll in a big production called Siddartha. She has been rehearsing for about a month. Over 20 students are participating. The theater producing Siddartha is the Marsh Youth Theater. The play will be staged in December. This is her third play so far. Since Kai has done this before, she isn't worried. This past weekend Alexandra Diaz and Samantha Bernardo performed at a dance competition called Spotlight in San Jose. Alex did a ballet solo and won double platinum(first place). Samantha and Alex's group performance for ballet won first overall. Samantha's tap routine won gold(second place). We are very proud of them!

The fifth graders have completed an interview and article regarding a senior citizen. The article will be presented as a gift to the person interviewed. Next, the students will write an essay comparing and contrasting their lives with the seniors.

The fifth grade is preparing a spring photographic exhibit. Stellar pictures of nature's beauty will soon be on display outside of the fifth grade classroom. Stop by and marvel at the skill of young photographers.

Birthdays!
Jacob Berman, Chris Taylor, and Rudy Acosta celebrated March birthdays. Each enjoyed a class party and donated a new book to the library.

Antoine Malouf and his father enjoyed the Giant's home opening day. Antoine will always remember Edgar Renteria hitting a homerun , Jerry Rice throwing out the first pitch and Steve Young catching it. Go Giants!

Ademir and Ian's club basketball team won 34-38 in overtime. Kameron won his baseball game 15-6 and now his team has won 5 games and lost O.

Congratulations to Adrianne Offril! Her new baby brother, Ellis has arrived! He was born on Thursday, March 4. He weighs 9 pounds and is 22 inches long.

Thanks to Sofia Torres who has been taking all the pictures for our blog. Maybe she'll be a photographer when she grows up.

About two weeks ago we had a special visitor in our classroom. Her name is Bailey and she is Jessica's hamster. She brought Bailey for her book report about a hamster. The book is called "Friendship According to Humphrey". During her book report, Bailey was rolling around in her ball and surprisingly escaped! Luckily Daniela found her and put her back in her ball. What an exciting book report!

The girls' basketball team played in a tournament last Saturday and won one game and lost the other. Hopefully they'll win their next game against our former classmate, Kaite McGhee. Good luck girls!

Sean Ramos had a game for his club team, the Dragons, on February 28. He played against 6th graders and won 31-41. Ademir and Ian also had a game for their club team, the Eagles, against the 6th grade Owls. The score was 39-30 and they won.

Sydnie and Crystal performed in a hula recital on March 6 at Scottish Rite Theater. Sydnie performed a dance with her mother and Crystal did a group dance.

Jack Bajek's birthday was on Sunday, March 7. Adrianne's birthday is on Saturday, March 13.

Adrianne Offril is expecting a little brother! His name is going to be Ellis. She is very excited and she can't wait to meet him.

Sophia Pacheco's birthday is on Friday, February 26 and the class will celebrate with a party. Rudy Acosta's birthday is next Monday, March 1. He is also having a party in the classroom. Sydnie Gamboa and Sean Coffey recently celebrated their birthdays.

There are a lot of games this week. Jessica, Sophia P, and Annalysse have a basketball game on Thursday at 6:00. Sean Ramos also has a basketball game on Thursday. Ademir and Ian have two basketball games on Sunday and they might play against Sean. Good luck everyone!

Sadly, on Wednesday, Sydnie Gamboa injured her ankle during P.E. She cannot put weight on her ankle for two weeks. She was supposed to play in the basketball game with Jessica, Sophia P, and Annalysse. Get well soon Syd!

The fifth grade is working on the Mayflower Diary project in Social Studies. The students are composing six diary entries during 1620 to reflect preparing for the voyage, crossing the Atlantic Ocean and landing in Cape Cod. A portion of the entries are factual, while other are composed from the students' imaginations. The project usually takes 7-10 days to complete.

On March 30 we are going on a field trip to the Conservatory of Flowers. We need at least six chaperones. We now have five chaperones and we need one more. The chaperones are Mrs. Elliott, Mrs. White, Leslie Torres (Sofia T's mom), Nancy Londero (Kevin and Daniela's mom), and Mrs. Villa (Ademir's mom). Please contact Mrs. Elliott if you would like to volunteer.

Week of exciting events!

This week we're entering in a poster contest! All schools of San Francisco can enter. Each of the students have to make a dental poster that says, "For a sparkly San Francisco smile, brush and floss daily." The winners' posters will be on the Muni buses. They will also get a variety of prizes. The teachers of the winners will get prize money.

Today some of the fifth graders will be competing in the Hoop-a-Thon. They only have one minute to shoot as many hoops as they can. The winner will get a 50 dollar gift card to any store of their choice.

The fifth grade girls started basketball practice on Thursday. Their coaches are Jon Gamboa and Carlito Santos. We can't wait for their first game!
